TN : 2004 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne - Mischief & Mayhem

Looked through the cellar last evening to come up with a wine to partner some wild Pacific salmon steaks, accompanied by fresh corn on the cob, wild rice and a goat’s cheese salad. Selected the 2004 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne – Mischief & Mayhem.

Yellow straw in colour; ample and penetrating aromas – peach laden with clove spice, citrus and mineral; clean and vibrant on the palate, as the acidity shapes a solid structure holding the flavours; nice mouth texture – flavours run well back into the mid palate; spicy peach/nectarine – wet stone – lime comes through but not aggressively, as there is also some orange peel; combined the flavours are most attractive; the finish is extremely long and satisfying – acidity frames the fruit and mineral.

This is an attractive white Burgundy – partners food extremely well, as it did with the red salmon steaks.

We listened to a Ray Brown album titled Some Of My Best Friends Are…The Piano Players. Ray’s bass glides effortlessly through multiple selections with Ahmad Jamal, Benny Green, Dado Moroni, Geoff Keezar and Oscar Peterson. These were recorded in late 1994. I’d forgotten just how good John Coltrane’s Giant Steps sounded with Dado Moroni on piano.
