TN: 2004 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Estate (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

Nicely structured, a bit toasty, just not enough fruit to make this an outstanding wine. It’s well built, and pleasant, but nothing superb. Hints of orange zest, bread dough. The finsh is fairly short. (87 pts.)

It’s possible you had a bad bottle.
My experience with 04 Peay has led me to drop Kistler and Aubert!!

Could be, I bought it off of WineBid, so I haven’t a clue as to the storage conditions. I was underwhelmed after hearing such high praise from people whose palates I respect. I will have to find some more and try again.

Hmmm… I certainly think highly of this wine … but with just one left I won’t be visiting anytime soon … so can’t add thoughts on where it is at. Hopefully this was an off bottle or just in a weird place. Certainly not a fruity wine I it was a bit austere. What Chards do you normally prefer?

And thanks for the note.

Cheers,

Jason

I have become a huge fan of peay. The 03 syrahs is phenomenal. The chards are awesome. Remember Vanessa apprenticed under aubert at Peter Michael

I have some 2007 Scallop Shelf PN and Chard on the way, and your notes are making me feel good. I ordered the wines in part on faith based on reviews I have read from drinkers (not writers) I trust and the winemaker’s track record making wines at Peter Michael.

Brad - you will be rewarded. The 07 Scallop Shelf is very, very good.

At the open house I blown away at how good the 03 estate Syrah was…earthy, spicy, balanced…I bought a bunch.

I’m not a huge fan of Chardonnay, especially overoaked versions, but Aubert tops my list, the Rivers Marie is another stunning version. I had two white burgs last night (blind), that I really liked. [suicide.gif]

Hmmm. I think it maybe worth getting another bottle. Maybe try a different vintage.

Mark - interesting comments on oak, since both the Aubert and Rivers-Marie saw 100% new oak.

That may be so, but the oak in those wines are well integrated into the fabric of the wine, the oak doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb to me.

As good as the Peay reds are, I think they don’t hold a candle to the whites. The Chard, the Viog, and the Rousanne/Marsanne blends are the only whites other than Aubert (coincidence?) I buy year-in, year-out…
