2004 Pago de los Capellanes Ribera del Duero Crianza - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero (8/7/2014)
– decanted 10 min. before initial taste –
– tasted non-blind over a few hours –
– 90% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon –
NOSE: red-fruited and oaky; a bit tart (VA?) – pomegranate; medium+ expressiveness; concentrated lilac; hint of supple smoky oak/toffee; tartness dissipates after a couple hours open.
BODY: violet-garnet color of medium-deep depth; no bricking; medium to medium-full bodied.
TASTE: dark fruit flavors are initially very muted; little bit of fine-grained tannins still sticking around; hints of leather and earth; light to medium-light alcohol taste; 13.5% alc.; splashing in the decanter does help open the wine somewhat: bitter coffee; light smoky leather; ripe; clean; red apple skin. I liked this wine a lot more five years ago — it’s hard for me to say whether my change of opinion is a result of how this wine has aged or if it’s a result of changed preferences. Regardless, I think this wine should be consumed now or over the next couple of years.
