2004 Maison Alex Gambal Puligny-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet (1/26/2012)
Light to medium gold colour. Nose was shy at first not giving much but hints of oak but as it opened up notes of apples, soft lemon, nutty oak and hints of cinnamon and floral. Besides the hint of floral, the nose has a richness to it that would have me leaning towards Meursault and not Puligny. In the mouth the wine has lots of body with rich and soft entry and mid palate that finishes fairly long and fresh with some minerality and a good shot of acidity. Similar to the nose, flavours of baked apples, soft lemon and nutty/toasty oak. While this isn’t a classic example of Puligny that exudes typicity, it’s a wonderful white burg that’s drinking very well, and should it avoid premox, it should continue to drink well for another 3-5 years. Excellent. (90 pts.)
The 04 Dents du Chien is also drinking great…
Bill,
This is the only 04 from Alex Gambal that I own (or have tasted), and I was quite impressed. I do, however, have a 6pack of the 07 Dents de Chien that I was going to keep my hands off for at least a few more years but I may pop one sooner in the name of science to see how it’s doing.
