The wine was tasted over 2 days and it is shut down hard. Did not budge from 1st to 2nd day. Showed very simple with dark fruit, mainly black currant. Leave it alone for a long time. I even tried the Vinturi on the 2nd day to no avail.
Vintage, dude…VINTAGE??
Say what!!!
I thought the same thing a year ago Otto. It was incredibly tight and unyielding.
I took one of these to Berserkerfest and was very disappointed. Monolithic and frankly close to undrinkable (for proof – there was plenty left at the end of the evening). CBow said it was better Day 2, but I’m thinking back of the locker or front of the ‘For Sale’ pile is the chosen path.
Lesson (that I have to keep learning): Cali Cab over 95 RP points = not for me.
I’ve LOVED the regular bottlings (Estate) of the Lewelling - so much so that I went for double my allocation on the '07’s. The Wight, as I understand, is supposed to sit in your cellar while you enjoy the Estate bottlings. I don’t have any experience with the '04 Estate or Wight, but if you have an '05 Estate, pop it, and see what you think. It’s incredibly complex and elegant.
Will, I drank two of them shortly after release and they were spectacular. Like Otto, I believe the wine has closed hard. In fact, Haley confirmed that to me when I was at Lewelling to taste the 06 and 07’s. If I were you, I would put yours in the back of your locker and take off for sale sign. The wine will re-emerge great by 2012-13.
I had a small sip of that bottle and agree that is was nowhere near my expectations for that wine. Had it locally maybe a year ago and it was tops of the night. I would hold on to it and not put the for sale sign on it just yet.
I took a sip or two later in the evening in Napa and it was definitely dormant. I opened an 05 Wight recently and it was hard as nails. The 06 Wight I tasted in August at Lewelling was not closed, but much firmer and more angular than the regular bottling. The Wight uses 100% new French Oak. It is meant to age a little, not enjoy continuously after relase.
Had the 02 Wight last week. Showed great after 90 minutes of air. I usually target these about 7-8 years from vintage. I have wondered about this one so thanks for the note. Seems pretty conistent with what’s on CT.
Had the 06 Wight in October and thought it was open but won’t touch these as well for many years.
Todd: I think the disappointment in the 04 Wight was compounded by the beauty of the regular 04 bottling. I’ve had it twice in the past 12 months, both times drinking way above its pay grade.
Tex/Jack (good to see you back, btw) - I’ll hide 'em away, but I’ll make you drink them with me in 5+ years. I am aging Napa wine averse, so if these blow goats I’ll leave it to you while I drink the better stuff you brought.

No way a properly stored bottle will blow anything other than your mind.
I’ll still have plenty from the 80’s and 90’s to share in five years Will. Give my best to Molly.

William, I’d LOVE to join you when you open those Wights - I’ll bring some of my own.
Wightfest 2014
I haven’t had a Lewelling Wight for awhile. All my 02’s are gone and the 05 and 06 are too young. Time for my first 04.
The notes in CT all echo what was said above from folks who tried this in 09. I gave the bottle 2 hours of air before giving it a go. The nose was not giving up much. The wine however was vibrant. It had the tell tale cassis and charcoal I fnd in Lewelling although not quite as deep and complex as I’ve had from their best bottles. The wine seemed to have some nice acidity to frame it really well and the tannins while starting to integrate indicate a long life ahead. I went ahead and decanted the wine before serving with some perfect Rib eye steaks. After 1 hour in the decanter the wine started to shut down. Not hard but holding back from what I tasted at the 2 hour mark. The steaks did the trick though and it really came back to life with the fat from the rib eye’s. A very good but young wine.
If you have these I would either wait until at least next year although 2012 is probably my target or open and leave in the botlle for 2-3 hours. The 02 drank better at 6 years though I think this will surpass it with age. Either way a hell of a wine for the $
Will- if you decide to sell let me know. Would love a few more bottles.
Sounds similar to my experience last summer and I’m encouraged that it sounds that it may hold promise beginning in '12. The pieces are together for a monster wine, but this vintage may be more Seaveyesque than most Napa wines.
A great wine that is just closed down for the moment. The '99 and '01 Wights are drinking great now.
