TN: 2004 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

2004 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (8/14/2009)
I have generally been worried about my bigger 04 Cali pinots and although this was not a superstar, it did NOT show excessive heat or a lack of balance. The nose had spice, brown sugar and some tree bark. Nice aromatics but not showing much distinctiveness. The palate is still a bit monolithic. I really hasn’t moved much. Big sweet fruit with a good amount of acid although the acid could not quite deal with the heaviness. Certainly packed and concentrated. For me, so far so good but the finish was a bit of a blob. The wine is holding together fine and I wonder if it will round the corner in fine shape. I hope it develops and the primary fruit backs down. As a p.s. my neighbor had an insightful comment. She had been drinking an inexpensive 06 red burg. I poured her a glass and she immediately blurted out, “its sweet”, followed by “wow that is juicy” and then “I wouldn’t want this with my meal but give me some raspberry cake”. So this is not mis-understood, she really liked the wine. (89 pts.)

Cheers,

Jason

We had the 2005 RRV the other night, and I got none of what you described. That is, no heat, no sweet fruit. What was there was the (for me) tell-tale cherry cola nose along with sweet/tart fruit. I gave it a 91. Enjoyable but not what I like in Pinot much anymore.

I had this wine last week and it was absolutely rocking: not like your note at all. I will say the 03 Cohn I had last month was a complete disaster but the 04 SC was simply stunning… maybe more so because i was expecting it to be disabled like the 03 was.

Cool. Although it doesn’t sound that different from my note. I didn’t get much heat and the sweetness was not from the RS sort, rather just very fruity. But of course these were very different vintages. I would expect the 05 to be a little more toned down.

Jason

Glad it was rocking for you. I did like it a lot but the finish did not work for me. But I actually thought it would be a little more out of shape considering the vintage.

Bummer about the Cohn. The last time I recall having that was two years ago at which time it was still okay. On the same night we had the 04 Cohn and it was in bad shape.

Jason

I realized i had a typo. Not is now changed to reflect no heat.

This is what KB has become to me. I still have a few bottles that I’ll gladly work through in the next year or so, but won’t be purchasing any more.

Jason;

I don’t think the KB was built to age, nor will this one. I think it is as ggod as it will get.

I had this wine a couple weeks ago at an Offline/tasting. Thought it was flabby and far to sweet for me. It was sweet. I think I gave it an 87 blind. Partially not my type of pinot, mostly just didn’t stand up to the other pinots being tasted.

Me too

Me three

I still enjoy KB Pinots, and based upon a recent tasting of the 07s, I will be buying as much as my allocation and budget will allow. Of course, I like other styles of Pinot too, and recently had a Mugnier Chambolle Musigny that blew my mind, but I don’t turn to KB when I am thirsty for those other styles.

Ditto… we just tasted through the 07 SVDs last week with Michael, and the KKKs were awesome!
