TN: 2004 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

  • 2004 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (6/11/2009)
Wow, wow, wow, do I love Pegau or what? I haven’t had the 2004 in a year, and man oh man has this really come into its own. Mindblowing aromatics, classic Pegau with the meat, band-aid, blood, and garrigue in a hot summer field kind of notes. Every single time I take I sip I practically throw both hands in the air, scream “YES” and want to start whacking high-fives to anyone in the neighborhood. The wine just makes you smile, it is that good. This is not the 1990, 2001 or 2003. It is much more in the vein of the 1994 and 1999, but I am shocked at how well it is drinking right now. Where a year ao I might have awarded 94 points on potential, this is a pure, here and now, throw me down and take me TODAY, 94 points of bliss. Maybe there is some upside, and maybe I am a point or so high. But this wine is ready to play right now. If you are sitting on some you owe it to yourself to get into some of this exuberance soon. It is in a very good spot. (94 pts.)

Eric,

I had this past fall/winter (maybe in Nov or Dec?) and it showed fantastically for me as well. I really like the 01 and 04 for current consumption. The 05 is not far behind for my tastes. The 06 I had just back in May and while it was good it was getting a bit big for my tastes… makes me wish I could go back to the $40 I paid for the 04’s!

Thanks Eric.
I like this wine in 04 quite a bit.
I need to pop one.

Great note, Eric!

The liquor/wine store down the street from me is sitting on a case and a half of this at about $65/bottle. It’s not moving at all, and I’ve been very tempted to go in and make him a deal on it.

I was going to pop another 2000 tonight. I might switch it up to the 2004 after reading your note.

I am so far behind on drinking my Pegau. Not opened any of the 2000 or 2001s, not to speak of the newer vintages…I should open a 2000 soon.

Had this last week and it was smoking. It was opened at a friends weeding in the private stash wine room. It wasn’t that private for long and one idiot was topping his glass with this. It was either this or an 01 Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche for WOTW.

Thanks for the TN Eric. I really like the '04. When the '05’s came out at a stupid price (50% more in MI through the normal channels), I bought up more of the '04’s instead.

Thanks Eric. I had it a couple of weeks ago:

2004 Pegau Reservee - Meats, mints, herbs and barnyard…perfect with roasted, seasoned lamb.

For anyone who’s had this: do you think it will shut down at some point?

I’m not suprised in the least at this showing as it has been a gorgeous wine since day one; often overlooked in comparison to 00 01 03 etc. Thanks for the update.

I think the 04 did whatever shutting it was going to do and is opening now. It reminds me a lot of the 1999 but cleaner and less funky. Very exuberant. I also love the 2000 but think that has a lot of gas in the tank. I am not touching my 2001’s, as I think that one is not showing anywhere near its potential. That may be my favorite Reservee since the 1990. Tough to have all these choices, eh?

thanks for the note, eric. [cheers.gif] i think one of these will be making an appearance at dinner tonight

I’ve gone through about a case of the 2000. Always good!

Thanks for the note

Sounds like I need to open one.

Sorry to be the sole contrary voice here (is that proper English?)

I read Eric´s note this morning (European time) and pulled one out of the shelf just now (9.27 pm GMT+1)
and was heavily disappointed - I am not sensitive to Brett, but this one was heavily “barnyard” (read “shitty”), especially after the glas of Domaine Richaud Ebrescade 2006 that was singing. Not much fruit - or drowned in less
enjoyable tastes - but not necessarily flawed, just awfully Bretty.

Ok, this was one bottle I pulled out of the shelf, I have some more and will hope for a better outcome…

Cheers
Christian

P.S.: Gotta love the smileys here [imnewhere.gif]

Hey Christian - nice to have you join us!

Some of us really are into the Bretty stuff - not if you are from San Diego, though!

Thanks for the note. I had this soon after it hit the shelves on the West Coast and found it exactly as you have. Haven’t had it since though.

Must be bottle variation. One the guys I was tasting with hates brett and is really sensitive to it. He really liked this bottle. I am almost brett blind myself, If I find brett the wine is pretty much undrinkable to everyone else.

Yes, I sincerely hope this is bottle variation.

This is the birthyear of my son “two of three” (Voyager style) and I have the cellar full of 2004 Pegau, uo
to double magnums - it scared me a bit when I had the bottle just now.

Todd, thanks, much more relaxed atmosphere here [berserker.gif]

Cheers
C.
