TN: 2004 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands)

  • 2004 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands (3/18/2010)
In honor of the newest Copain Mailer hitting today, I decided to pop one. I realized that I had not had a Copain of any kind in a while. I have seen on the BB’s that there is a new style to these wines, but I am not sure I want this ‘old Style’ to go away. The key to me is the way this wine has integrated to a smooth and lovely drink. The front of the wine is chocolate and cherries, but one flavor after the other. Mid palette the wines are heavy in the leather and tobacco, but the back end of the wine leaves me with a hint of strawberry fighting through the leather. These are very enjoyable, and I plan on continuing to enjoy these for awhile as they still have plenty of time in the bottle left. (92 pts.)

I think the stylistic change is referencing the PN more than the Rhones. If they change the viognier, I riot!

Great note Ken.

The Hawks Butte cuvee is a classy bottling for Wells. I hope you ordered the 2007, as it will surpass the 2004.

I planned on it after enjoying this '04 so much. Thanks for the rec. Can’t see how I lose on this one
