TN: 2004 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Private Reserve)

  • 2004 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Private Reserve) - Chile, Central Valley, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto (11/27/2009)
Initially at ~55degF: Very brambly with pencil shavings aromas. Some stems in the background. Initial acids is overtaken by a lush, rich texture in the mouth. Lots of tannins coat the teeth. Some juiciness/acidity returns on the medium-long finish with some slight bitterness. After ~20min in the glass, some powdery vanilla and cherry cola aromas emerge. Alcohol level (warmth and bitterness) is a little off putting on the finish. Sadly this currently performs on par with a $18-20 bottle of Casa Lapostolle cuvee Alexandre or Montes Alpha Cabernet. Even with more bottle age, I’m not sure if the fruit, alcohol and tannins will find a happy balance.
