2004 Clos Mogador Priorat- Spain, Catalunya, Priorat (6/10/2009)
Purple, inky, very youthful color. Perfumed nose of black fruits, coco, and not much else. Aromatically still closed even after two days of being open. Palate is dark, dense, and brambly with fruit intertwined in the toasty oak and earth. The finish is lengthly comprised of fine tannin. This wine is very concentrated and closed at this point. As others have stated this wine is a hold at the moment. 35% Garnacha, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 10% Cariñena.
Of all the Priorat wines I think that Clos Mogador is the most classically structured and not only rewards but truly requires cellaring. I am currently digging on the 98,99 and 00, and I think the 01 will start to drink well in the next year or three. 04-06 will be waiting another 5 years or so.
As an aside, I think the 01 and 04 will be tremendous wines. 05 will be almost as good, 06 I’m not sure on yet but it should be comparable to 06 or close, despite a lot of naysayers about the 06 vintage (just because it’s not as ripe doesn’t mean it’s not as good!).
My friend shared a bottle of the 2001 with me a few months ago. after a few hours of being open it was drinking well. still tight and a long life ahead of it, but damn tasty.
i wish I had some in my cellar… hopefully he has more!
For me at this point this wine is much too similar to other wines I have in the cellar currently to warrant purchasing more.
I would however like to try some older vintages of this wine to gain more perspective.
Out of the 98-01’s what vintage would be a good example to try?
Given that Jay loves basically every wine he tastes, eventually you are bound to love a wine that he has loved… not that it doesn’t make you cringe a little!
