2004 Château Léoville Barton- France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (1/17/2010)
dense, tannic and full of layered, classic flavors - cassis, licorice, bitter dark chocolate and an intense smokey and earthy component.
balanced, weighty and offers terrific promise with some cellaring
Barton simply cant be beat - offers everything - place, flavors, quality, price! (93 pts.)
I last had this at a tasting with Anthony Barton at Sherry-Lehman, which was a nice treat. I broadly agree with your note, though the wine didn’t quite ‘wow’ me to the same degree. I remember tobacco, dark fruits, and a nice balance, but came away thinking that the ~$60 (granted, that’s the current price, not EP) would be better spent elsewhere.
My impressions were strikingly similar in October. My notes include “Gorgeous, classic… deep, tannic, great balance and concentration.” The leftovers on Day 2 were “stern” but I wrote “This seems profound.” I gave it 92+
The 04 Pichon Baron we had in the same tasting of 02s and 04s was the other standout, markedly softer than the Leoville Barton but still with a lot of umph.
