TN: 2004 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Selección Especial (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja)

  • 2004 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Selección Especial - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (2/1/2010)
I know this is young, but I wanted to try one. Popped and poured. The oak was over bearing. With a lot of swirling and air, it came into a better focus. Lots of good cherry fruit. Plenty of vanilla and fresh cut lumber too. VERY tannic. I drank a glass and then left the bottle open on the counter for Day 2. Still a good amount of oak, but the texture is much silkier. Lots of fruit. This is going to need plenty of cellar time, but I think all the pieces parts are present. I think it has a 4 or 5 point upside. For now, though, the oak is too intrusive to rate it outstanding. (88 pts.)

I am drinking this right now - and absolutely LOVE it!

I am a Muga fan but for the price this is pretty serious wine. Long life ahead - would love to try this, the Torre Muga and the Prado Enea all right next to each other.

Extremely versatile producer…

Great stuff, but IMO needs some time to show at its best.

Hmmm… I am hoping for that upside. Mine will continue to sleep for at least 3 more years.

Have you tried the Reserva? I really liked that wine and have tucked a few away. A great value.

You mean the regular Muga Reserva? (This one is also classified Reserva). I haven’t tried the 04, although I’d expect it to be very good as well.

I’d say five more years at least on this one …

We have had a 94 Prado Enea and a Torre recently that, to my palate are just starting to come into their own. We are drinking our 01 reserva though there is no need to be in a hurry but, still have some older ones lying around.

Yeah, Loren’s bottle is the Special Selection. I own it but haven’t tried it although I have also have the Especial.

Right, it’s the Selección Especial that I’m familiar with, too. I’d expect their regular Reserva to have a bit less stuffing than this one, and so show as slightly less modern at this youthful stage. FWIW. (I’d give them both a few years yet).
