2004 August West Pinot Noir Rosella’s Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (8/24/2009)
In looking at Richard J’s notein CT, I don’t sense VA in this wine, so I’d bet his bottle had the flaw he mentions. I looked for heat, gloppy fruit, sting or acetone, but don’t get those markers. Instead, there is some weight to this wine as it warms, some brown spice, candied watermelon, graphite on the nose, citrus/tart and strawberry, along with some mineral on the finish. It has the August West/Ed K recipe, of delicacy meets new world. Drink window? I’d say now. There is some citrus to let it go but it has all the facets it needs now to exhibit the CA profile and Ed’s approach.

You’d recommend an immediate drinking window on this wine, Frankie? That’s still quite young (typically) for an August West (and old for a Frankie wine
).
Did you do this with food?
With food, yes. My wife made a wild salmon, with orzo and steamed organic carrots with curry and some vanilla. It paired very well and my SIL and I killed the whole bottle in 2 hours. Since I can type and think quite well right now, I would say that Ed K got the alcohols right.

Todd, since I believe the wine has aspects of the CA style (not burgundy), I would say it’s right in the proper place to drink. FWIW, there is some of this over on Wine Bid for a nice price, too. But, with all the mailer action these days, it’s bye-bye for my last 2004 and onto 2005!
