TN: 2004 Amon Ra

This was opened and sat back in the cellar for 4 hours or so before dinner.

It was very dark and an explosive nose of dark berries. Lots of blueberry in particular.

On the palate, the Blueberries were there with Blackberries and good spices, along with the expected vanilla shake quality.

Very thick mouthfeel right from the get go and a long finish. It is a fruit bomb for sure, but with a good amount of tannin too. It pushes all the way to the edge withoutt getting syrupy like some wines get when they try this. If you like this style of wine, this is an excellent example of it. I like it, but if I drank it too often, it would become very tiresome IMO.

I last had this about 18 months ago and this bottle was a lot more open. While it still can go a while and has lots of life in it, I don’t know that it will get better than it is now.

Nice note.

It’ll be very interesting to see how these wines mature. On release, stunning. But who really knows how a marque without any history will age. I say “if you like them you like them young, drink them young.”.

I have a few stashed away and will try them again in a few years. Loved it when it came out. Thanks for the TN.

Drank the 05 Sunday night at a wine dinner with my travel friends.

Wow. Lush and balanced. Oakey. Fruit of blackberries. It was delicious. We opened this 2 hours prior to dinner.

Dan,

It’s been 18 months since I had one of my 05’s. It was a giant leap ahead of the 2004. Much more balanced than the 04 was then or now.
