Light yellow-white in the glass, with a nice nose that features white fruits (pineapple & apples, but not as tart as Granny Smith’s) surrounded by slate nuances. Very complex nose.
Vibrant acidity keeps this fresh on the palate, with the apples following through on a lengthy finish. This is quite nice right now when paired with food (I just had it with pork tenderloin in a mustard-cream-based sauce), where the richness of the dish plays off the acidity. Per the label, 12.5% alcohol.
Love the 04 Alzingers. Try the Steinertal if you have one too - amazingly good stuff.
Rick, I’m also a fan of his '04’s (both Gruner & Riesling), although one that I think he may have overshot the mark on was the Muhlpoint Federspiel - even for a guy who likes acidity in wine, this was a tad shrill. But I still have a bottle left, so I will try it again in a few to see what’s developed.
IMO, 2004 may be the most overlooked/underrated Austrian vintage in years. Another producer who did very well was Nigl - his riesling privat bottling is excellent.
Have you had any of the 02 Nigl Privats? I have some and was thinking of cracking them. I need to try my 04 Alzinger GVs too…
