2003 Tablas Creek Syrah - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (1/4/2010)
Very dark and oaky on the nose. Terribly out of balance on the palate - overbearing oak. Are there syrah characteristics under that oak? Couldn’t really tell, even after being opened 2 hours. This was an unenjoyable drink and has been the only Tablas Creek red I’ve had that has disappointed and furthermore been less then very good. I would even say average to below average.

Thanks for the note. Those that like TC seem to say their syrah is the weak point in the line up. I haven’t had one yet, but the tannat and rhone blends are darned good.

Tannat? I would love to try it. When I was a wine club member I got a counoise that was very tasty…
I’ve only had the 07, but the notes and reviews indicate it is consistently good year in and year out. I’d have guessed a syrah blind. Dense chewy tannins and power without going too crazy. The counoise sounds interesting.
Tim et al. I have been drinking these wines for that the last 4 vintages. I have enjoyed the white wines they have produced much more than the reds. The reds always tasted “made” to me while the whites were very type perfect. However the last vintage or two the reds have really improved. Especially the blends. The whites have ironically sufffered over the last couple vintages. Still great value when on the mailing list.
cool, then I found them at the right time. Thanks for the thoughts on the whites, looking forward to trying them.
All I’ve had of 2007 is the Cotes de Robles red blend (half grenache and 25/25 syrah/counoise) but it’s multiples better than the 2003 version which was all over the place, and the 2007 is a great deal at about $21.
