TN: 2003 Lone Madrone - Nebbiolo - Il Toyon vnyd (Paso Robles, CA)

NOSE: warm red fruits - starting to smell aged; hint of chalky spearmint; molasses. Nose is moderately expressive.

BODY: medium-light to medium bodied; rustic garnet color with some bricking at the edges; color is of medium-light depth - lighter than I would expect from a 6yr.-old Nebbiolo.

TASTE: heavy alcohol taste; stewed fruits and a hint of tar; well-balanced between acid and tannin - tannins are a bit grainy; mostly pretty one-note; medium length finish (approx. 35 sec.); a bit disjointed; not nearly as good as the ‘02 vintage of this bottling. Same flavors on Day 2, but starting to taste oxidized. 14.69% alcohol. Disappointing.

B: 50, 4, 11, 11, 5 = (81 pts.)

thanks for the note Brian…I’m not familiar with this wine (or most of Lone Madrone’s wines for that matter, although I do drive by the tasting room almost every day), and I was curious if you know the fruit source for this wine

i believe it’s the Il Toyon vnyd … unless that’s just a “name” given to this wine. LM does have an “Il toyon” syrah - their website indicates the fruit for that wine comes from Terra Bella vineyards, so maybe the nebbiolo comes from there as well – i dunno. The '02 vintage of this bottling is very good.
