TN: 2003 Dyer Cabernet Sauvignon Dyer Vineyard (USA, California, Napa Valley, Carneros)

  • 2003 Dyer Cabernet Sauvignon Dyer Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Carneros (2/15/2012)
Dark; very. Nose of camphor infused black cherries, black raspberries and cola. palate show an almost ‘fabricated’ quality consistent with other 2003s I have had. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice Wednesday night drop, but transcendental it’s not; Black currant, cardamom, hints of Kirsch-Royal and framboise meet you at the door. A bit of dryness shows itself. Tannins are still somewhat angular and edgy. Some plushness and cream pop in for a visit, but the fabricated thing remains in play, even after 1 hour opened. Finish is decent. Still, a veritable ‘bargain’ at $19 on WB this past Fall. (89 pts.)

I posted about this winery in the “Old School” thread. $19 is a steal for that, outright.

You’re correct. $19 is a steal. I’ve had the 2003, and fabricated is definitely not the word that I would use to describe it. I saw your write-up on them the other day. I agreed with your take. Dyer makes old-school Diamond Mountain cabs that age.
