Was there potential for this to be a great wine?

Dan, It was too monolithic for me to tell. No hint at greatness. I brought home a half of the bottle we’ll see if there is any improvement tonight.

My first reaction to this was “this is one of the better California pinots I’ve had recently”. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. Not falling apart so much as hunkering down and assuming a monolithic and alcoholic style that was tiring to drink.

Still very interesting to have the chance to try one of my favorite Burgundies (Chevillon LSG) from a problematic vintage. Thanks Suzanne!

I will wait for Part II tomorrow.

I am generally not a fan of 2003s, and I would think Chevillon would have particular problems, based upon his winemaking style.

Seen a couple of 2003 Chevillon 1er crus marked down locally - so enquiring minds definitely interested - especially before new 6.25% sales tax on alcohol kicks in on the 1st of August!

Didn’t have the big boys, but I bought '03 Pruliers and Perrieres before tasting (hey, it’s Chevillon). After tasting the Perrieres twice, I gave away my 2 remaining bottles. I liked Pruliers a bit more, but still the Chevillon I own that I’m least optimistic about.

Chevillon makes memorable Burgundy in my book but 2003 is not my vintage and didn’t buy a whole lot… I might regret it in 10+ years but oh well there are other vintages in my cellar!

Thanks for the note!

Opened the other half of the bottle last night and the front end was pleasant but whoa the back end was pure hot alcohol.

Thanks Suzanne for letting us know.

Yeah, I have to say I’m not a fan of Chevillon’s '03s either. I don’t ususually sell wine, but I sold mine off.

Cheers,
-Robert

Me too! (I only had a few bottles of two different vineyards each, but I would much rather “trade” them for something I know I’ll like) My two examples tasted were nasty. (Roncieres and Pruliers)
