  • 2003 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (4/9/2011)
    Pretty good stuff. This seemed to be one of the growing number of 2003 red Burgs that appear to be on a long, slow march towards drinkability. It had a lovely nose with little of the overt roastedness that has come up often with this vintage. Here, there were dark fruit scents nestling amidst savoury sous bois, mushroom and meat scents, some gentle minerality and a bit of Chinese herbs. The palate showed quite a layer mouth-coating tannins, but this were finely shaped rather than coarse. That aside, the wine almost had an elegant edge to it, with surprising balance to its dense, rich dark fruit flavours. Quite a bit of power, but the wine was entirely well proportioned. The finish had more spice notes, some meatiness and, finally, just that hint of dry 2003 woodiness. I liked it, and I do think that this will continue to improve over the next decade and perhaps even longer. (90 pts.)

Hi Paul,

This is good to hear. I don’t own any Chaignots, but I’ve still got a bunch of Bousselots, Vaucrains, and Roncieres from the vintage, and when I last tried them (about 2-3 years ago), they were not an easy drink. It might be time to think about revisiting them again. OTOH, I don’t hold out much hope for my Chevillon 2004s…

Sigh. I have plenty of 2004s. Still hoping they will come around.

I would not touch the 2003s yet though. This wine clearly needed a lot more time even though it was showing promising signs.

I may pull an '04 Bousselots or Chaignots soon in the name of science, as I think I’ve not touched them in many years. It was not a good experience at the time though. At least I can console myself in the fact that they were cheap ($25 from Premier Cru), but I so love Chevillon, and the wines are so remarkably consistent, that it sucks when they suck.

Seems like sound advice to lay off the '03s for a while.

LOL, well stated. The '04s do suck, and a lot of folks hoping for a future turnaround. Time will tell.
