TN: 2003 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands)

Upon opening just a tad bit of musty funk, but it subdued quickly to fruit and a leathery gaminess with smoke and olive. Nice deep purple color. There is a lot going on in this wine right away, but it all is so extremely balanced. It evolves with each pour and taste, which is something I really enjoy in a wine. I think it is very drinkable now and will have a hard decision to let my last bottle rest. The finish is strong, but just a very slight touch of heat. It is almost not worth mentioning in the overall performance of this wine.

I love this wine each year - one of my favorites of Wells’. Been a year since I last opened one - sounds like it’s time for another. Thanks for the update.

One of my all-time favorite syrahs. A very savory character to this wine. The olive description is right on. I have had four bottles of this wine and never gotten a hint of heat, but you may be more sensitive than I. I may have to crack another one soon…
