2003 Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Franc Pritchard Hill Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/31/2009)
I bought this bottle when Dan Posner moved his shop from Rye to North White Plains and he found it, badly cracked lip and pitted glass on the bottle, buried in the basement. My first Chappellet and he offered it cheap. Threw it in my cellar and decided to open it with cheese, pate, baguette and “There Will Be Blood” for New Year’s Eve. Popped and poured. The color was about as dark as wine can get. Impenetrable black with just a hint of red color around the edges. The nose was spicy and the palate was roast meat, smokiness and herbs with a bit of pepper and perhaps some cedar. This was not a fruit driven wine for me. It had a very strong and meaty mouth feel. The finish was moderate. My wife felt the alcohol went to her head, and it was 15%, but I did not find it noticeable. (91 pts.)
