2003 August Kesseler Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheingau (6/28/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2 hours –
I was blown away to see this producer on a local restaurant’s wine list, and for only $55! - this was an easy buy. Cork didn’t quite make it out intact, and was soaked about 80% of the way up.
The wine … [sigh] … oh man, the wine was some kind of wonderful! Beautiful Rheingau nose of zippy tropical melons, punctuated with electric petrol. The sweetness was on the sweeter side of Spatlese, and the only real fault I could find with this wine was that it became a bit fat as it warmed to room temperature. Little-to-no botrytis, but oh-so-gorgeous!! Lush mouthfeel, everything I look for in a Spatlese. Better than the 2007 Leitz bottling from the same vineyard. I will be returning to this restaurant many times in the near future until their stash of this beauty is gone. I didn’t score this one out, but my gut tells me this would have scored in the 94 - 95 point range. Fantastic!!
