2003 Arcadian Pinot Noir Rio Vista - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills - Sta. Rita Hills (10/20/2009)
This Pinot has so much of what I like about SRH Pinot, and some of what I don’t. The nose is still quite hot - too much alcohol in this wine, but it doesn’t show through on the palate, which is promising. At cellar temperature, the heat doesn’t come through on the nose, but as it gets to room temperature, it clearly shows. Eventually, you can pick up some of the great SRH spice and brambly fruits on the nose, but it’s well hidden by high ABV. The palate has that telltale weight and spicy fruit of SRH, but not the overextracted fruit that can turn me away, and make me think I’m drinking Syrah. Acid is very strong, and I expect this wine to go quite a few more years in development. Finish is a bit on the short side - less than expected - but quite pleasant overall. (90 pts.)
