2003 Arcadian Pinot Noir Francesca’s Cuvée- USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (10/20/2013)
P&P’ed. This baby was ready to go last night. Within 15 minutes of being poured the aromatics were stunning with forest floor, cherry pie and some haunting spices. Palate was off the charts delicious with perfect balance. Can’t start to describe the sensation in the mouth but it was very pleasurable. As close to the perfect pinot that I have had the pleasure of imbibing. Francesca should be very happy on her 21st birthday, hopefully she has a pallet of this stuff!
2003 Arcadian Pinot Noir Francesca’s Cuvée- USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (1/16/2015)
– decanted four hours before tasting –
– tasted single-blind on Day 1, and non-blind on Day 2 –
– Blend of the following: one barrel from the Pisoni vineyard and one barrel of clone 4 Pommard from the Fiddlestix vineyard, 30 gallons of Dierberg vineyard clone 5 Pommard and 30 gallons of Dierberg vineyard clone 13 –
NOSE: Day 1: cherry; earthy; tar (blind, I thought this was the ’05 Pisoni, which was served blind alongside). Day 2: clean; red-fruited; faint tar/asphalt note; hints of earth and mineral; moderately expressive with medium or medium+ complexity.
BODY: dark garnet color of medium-deep depth; very slight shading of brick at the wine’s edges; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: Day 1: high acid; purple-fruited; earthy; extremely good. Day 2: smooth; ripe fruits — plums, blackberry; medium-light leather note; high acid; 13.2% alc. not noticeable; impressive concentration of fruit; no tannin; drink now and over at least the next 5 years — and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go much further than that, really. Very excellent wine!
