Enjoyed comparing two great but very different 2002 Volnays last night.
2002 Montille Taillepieds: this is in such a nice place right now, gorgeous mature burgundy. The far more developed and delicate wine of the two, the nose was full of earth and leaves with some hints of red fruit. Felt appropriately autumnal. Palate was fully integrated and mature but still was kept fresh by a nice level of acid. I have 2 more and will likely enjoy them all soon, but no rush.
2002 d’Angerville Clos des Ducs: the one and only Ducster, this wine is a powerhouse of a premier cru. Far less developed, this did not have as expressive of a nose. Some whiffs of red fruits and mushroom. On the palate, it was full of powerful structure and red fruits with a hint of tertiary notes developing. I have another bottle and will leave it for 5 years. Glad I enjoyed one now, but this isn’t quite at peak yet. Borderline grand cru level.
Fun to compare such different wines from the same vintage and village.
Love the Montille with age, very delicate - I have vintages from 1999-2005 in the cellar. All great, however preference for 99-02-05. Even 2004 is very nice.
Drank them both over 5-6 hours or so. No decant. The Montille put on some weight and fruit with air and the Ducs loosened up a bit, was pretty tight upon opening.
It was delicious, just a little bit more primary than I expected for a burg with over 20 years of bottle age. It was tight for the first hour or two of being open, but became pretty open with some air.
