TN: 2002 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling

Opened last night and saved the last half of the bottle for today. Honey color in the glass, tropical fruit and petrol on the nose. In the mouth the wine offers plenty of green apple and limestone with a hint of petrol. The texture is a touch oily, reminiscent of bees wax. A nice burst of acidity enters at the finish. While this wine is very young and should improve after several years in the cellar, it is a fun ride now. It also was much better on the second day, picking up some weight and intensity.

As an aside, this wine also served as a nice compliment to a spicy Caribbean fish stew I made yesterday. I love Alsatian whites with spicy food!

Had this by the glass at dinner in NYC last week, thought it was stellar as well. Picked up some bottles on sale at a NY shop to bring home

Alan remind me to bring a bottle of the 96 to the rib cookoff where you collect your trophy

This has gotten relatively expensive as to where it was a few years ago up here - now about $40 for the 2002 & 2004 - I remember buying the 1997 at about $17. How good is sale price?

Hello fellows,

A really top wine from a top producer in a top vintage; I just love this stuff. Despite its often frightening acid levels CFE is a bit fatter than Trimbach’s Clos St Hune which gives it a really pleasing ageing profile; you can drink them at pretty much any age. And they really do age.

The first vintage I tasted of CFE was the 1979 when I was at the advanced age of eight. I remember telling my mother after having my tiny taste, “Wow, wine can be really good. This tastes of so many different things”. Perhaps my appreciation was unsophisticated at the age of eight, but I’ve had this wine a few times since then and I was right, it does taste of many different things.

Cheers,
David.

An ITB friend of mine here in Maryland (fellow Berserker Mike M.) found this for the low, low price of $30 per, so I was able to pick up several bottles at that price.

David, that is a great story. Even at age 8 you had a keen appreciation for the finer things in life!
