TN: 2002 Thackrey Orion

Time for a new data point on this one. Still a fairly dark purple-red color. Typical Orion nose–dark berries, eucalyptus/menthol, and some smokiness. The taste follows the nose, but the midpalate is just a touch sweeter/riper than the nose suggests. Still, there’s plenty of acidity and fine tannins to provide structure; a medium-long finish with that resiny/menthol quality. It’s starting to approach the early phases of maturity, but I suspect it will continue to improve for at least the next 5-7 years, and cellar for the next 10-13 years minimum. A great vintage of Orion, and between a “wow” and a “wow plus.” Lovely with the gamey flavors of hanger steak.

any recent thoughts on the '00 version?

Stephen–Haven’t had the 00 version in quite some time. Not a great vintage though, so I wouldn’t cellar it as long.
