2002 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Alte Reben - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (6/10/2014)
Definitely a bit of a wine genie trapped in this bottle, initially showing a fair amount of color, some old petrol on the nose, and a bit of aged funk on the palate. An hour of air later and this is singing: lightened in color to medium hay, much of the petrol has dissipated from the nose, and the palate is vibrant, flavorful, medium intensity, with subtle layers of complexities, very nice acidity, hints of yellow flowers and stone fruit. Beautiful, in its prime, and happy to have a few more. (94 pts.)

Gobelsburg does not get the praise/publicity is deserves.

Funny you would say that, David, as I would have the exact opposite reaction - I can think of ten producers I’d rather drink that Schloss Gobelsburg, and I’m a big Terry Theise fan in general, so it’s almost like I “want” to like their wines, but I find they seldom move me.

To my palate, winemakers like Prager, Hirtzberger and Nikolaihof are all better, and at least based on what I’ve tried, I would also say I enjoy Alzinger, Nigl, FX and Rudi Pichler more as well. I might even include Hirsch on that list.
