TN: 2002 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill (USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley)

  • 2002 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/30/2009)
Another 2002 to celebrate our youngest’s bday year. This hasn’t really gone anywhere since the last bottle 2 years ago. HUGE rich gobs of dark fruit…still quite sweet, yet has a sour skin acidity to tame it down a bit. Creamy and floral…still think there is Viognier in this?..white pepper/coffee spice, mocha, liquid smoke, hickory smoked meat, kirsch liqueur. Big spicy mid…finish is kind of abrupt and sour. This is a big and tasty wine…not as amazing as a couple years ago…but could get a little interesting with some more age on it. Drink now or later…I don’t think you can do wrong. (93 pts.)

Still kickin it 4.5 yrs later…amazingly my last note is still pretty much spot on…maybe a tad bit thinner with a little more acid skin…but not much diff here! Hate the wax…but these wines are always a joy!

Pax was on an Internet broadcast a few days ago and I asked him about how things were aging and whether the doubters who said his wine was going to fall apart were correct. Of course, he said they were holding up very well. I commented that the 04 Agharta was rocking and I think he said it could be a 30 year wine. I would not be surprised.
