TN: 2002 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Cliff Edge (Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Grampians)

One thing I’ve particularly enjoyed purchasing from Garagiste is the Australian offers, as they either the big bold Shirazs of Barossa or McLaren Vale are at rock bottom prices or something unusual and off the beaten path is the case with the following wine. I’ve never had a cool climate Australian Shiraz before, and I was immediately struck by the restraint and focus of the wine, plenty of blackberry fruit yes, but it was nervous and on edge. The age of the wine has undoubtedly served matters well, as the fruit acid and tannin were all in balance. Not crazy complex mind you, but effortless to drink, and a real buy at $9.99. (89 pts.)

That is consistently one of my favorite wines from Australia and the 2002 wasn’t even the great IMO. I also put it at 89 pts. I wish there were more wines like that available over here. At its best it has those notes of pepper and spice that so many Australian and CA syrah can lack. Great price and I almost pulled the trigger myself when I got the email.

02 was so so then? Right, any vintages in particular I should look for Greg?
