TN: 2002 Lancaster Estate Red Wine (USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley)

  • 2002 Lancaster Estate Red Wine - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (12/11/2009)
If I tasted blind, by the boquet I would guess it was a young Bordeaux – pencil shavings, also had some black cherry and black licorice.
Very nice mouthfeel, rich with a fairly long finish – chocolate, licorice (good-n-plenty), and a touch of minty tobacco. Still similar to a young BDX, but much softer tannins. Elegant wine, and although it is on the softer side, there is plenty of time left in this one.
2002 was a nice vintage for Lancaster, both the Red Wine and the Nicole’s.

Thanks for the date point Eric. Lancaster makes some really nice wines and its a great winery to visit in Sonoma as well.

I recently had a 97 that was drinking beautifully, the 02 you had sounds killer.

I have a couple bottles of the 2001. It is very bordeaux-like. I last had a bottle a bit over a year ago and the tannins were really gripping. It needs lots of age.
