TN: 2002 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (12/27/2013)
Opened and aired in the glass for 45 minutes before dinner. Medium ruby color. Nose was a perfume of forest floor, raspberry, cherry blossom, plum, and earth. Started out smoky and sweet on the palate, but deepened through the evening to reveal iron, earth, dark plum, pulpy (almost primary) black cherry, and licorice notes. Ample acidity and smoothed tannins in a fine balance, with a long finish of earthy red and black fruit shot with tensile sweet grip. Wow, so much power in an effortless and complex array, like a coiled spring just beginning to unleash. Sampled young, so next bottle in maybe 8 to 10 years. (94 pts.)

Yum. Sounds great, even young.
Nice job.
Cheers, Doug!

Fabulous stuff. I only had a single magnum which is no more. Now the cost on these wines is just sky high to backfill. Great note.

Love Dujac CdlR! Must buy for me every year. Great note, Doug. I have a young cellar, so I open CdlR even younger than 02, lol.

Dennis, Don, Joe,

Thanks for your comments. I had two bottles and decided I wasn’t getting any younger, so went for it. Really glad I did. This bottle was so delicious and classy!

Cheers,
Doug

I am starting to realize that the difference between a good bottle of Burgundy and a great bottle of Burgundy is a lot of patience and restraint. My 2002 Burgundies are all in the USA, safely out of my paws. Thanks for the note and for the vicarious enjoyment.

I had a glass of this several years ago. Tannic. If I had had it blind I’m not certain I’d identify it as pinot, not because it is atypical, but because it was all structure. Anyway, based on my 1990’s days of drinking very young Cabernet, I was wowed by the quality, really wowed, it seemed like it would one day be a perfect wine. Whatever it was.

Carlos,

You are a man of wisdom, since your cellar is across a body of water! Alas, mine was a drive across town.

George,

I am certain that the years have made a difference. On this particular showing the wine was quite silky.

Cheers,
Doug

Doug, had this a few months ago off a restaurant list that had it for a silly low price. Like you said, so utterly young that it deserves at least another 10 years wait. Unfortunately, that was their only bottle. I did relieve them of both CSDs though and will wait at least 10 years for those.

Thanks for sharing!

I purchased 3 bottles of 2002 at release. Was planning to open one at the 15-16 year mark. Thanks for your note.

The 02 Dujac CldR was the “it” wine that really got me into burgundy (thank you Fu). Like Joe, my cellar is young and therefore, forced to open younger Dujac Roches than 2002. Incredibly young wine, but oh so beautiful.

Fred,

Hope your bottle was enjoyable also. The Clos St. Denis is a great find. The two grand crus often run neck-and-neck from this house.

Sanjay,

You have much to look forward to. Now of course I wish I had bought more.

Juyuan,

It is an irony that in order to acquire red burgundy and have it age appropriately, one has to starting buying it right out of college! Only half kidding.

Cheers,
Doug

Had another one of these a few months ago, thought this was really one o the '02’s that still need a lot more time, in that it drank ok, but not like many other '02’s which are far more accessable at present…

Paul,

I think I was more lucky than smart.

Cheers,
Doug

It showed well in a line up of CdlR we did a few months back. Thanks for the note.
Cheers
Jeremy

Jeremy,

Saw your note in CT. It was one of the reasons I thought about trying one out.

Rgds,
Doug

Sounds amazing… CdlR is probably my favourite Dujac wine. Unfortunately, it is slowly being priced out of my reach.

I will soon have to enjoy it vicariously through notes like yours!

Paul,

Yes, the newer vintages are out of reach for me now also. I am diverting more towards VR Malconsorts these days.

Cheers,
Doug
