I was fortunate enough to visit the Domaine in 2004 and taste the 2003 out of barrel that were of course atypical.
I bought a bit of their 02s and as young wines the stem inclusion was very noticeable and almost leant a pine needle/green streak to the wines.
Today this is singing. It is everything that I want in mature Burgundy. Dimension and composure. There’s a spicy edge to the glossy red and black fruits, hints of pine needle sap, earth and undergrowth. Absolutely at its prime, it’s textured and layered.
“Dimension and composure”.
Yeah, I am totally stealing that…
Sampling a 19’ Arlot Forest tonight in the name of science. Dark, rich and very berry.
Nice wine.
Thanks @Steve_McL ! I assume the labels are still their understated self?
Excellent descriptors. Very evocative
Yup. Boring label, tasty wine tho.
Twin sons of different mothers…more jazz trombone than jazz flute
19 Arlot NSG 1er Forets St. George monopole - Dark, rich, very berry, bit of garrigue and salty tannins. Bit of oak I think, but integrating. According to Steen Othman (Winehog), winemaker Geraldine Godot made the 19 with 66% whole cluster. Interestingly, the 23’ version is 100% destemmed. Liked this 19 a lot. Recommended
15 Bruno Clair Gevrey 1er Les Cazetiers - Dense, dark and serious, salty licorice, with the fruit starting to dry out. Almost Syrah-like, you might confuse it blind for a northern Rhône, (minus the pepper). Nothing shy here. Fine to open now, but it’s still got years of positive evolution to go. I liked it, but preferred the Arlot.
After a couple glasses of the hearty reds, of course it made sense to end with a glass of “Fine”. Alas, this was not for me: Leads with oaky vanilla, banana and powerful alcoholic vapors. Sweet ribbon candy. Not my thing, though I did enjoy the 99’ version very much.
Steve: I’ve turned into an Arlot fan too.
They have that airy, red-fruited, light-footed, berry-driven quality. With just the right amount of crunch.
Bertheau and Ramonet reds fall into same yummy camp.
The bigger L’arlot wines are pretty whole cluster driven but I think they handle it far better than Dujac.
