TN: 2002 d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier

2002 d’Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale (5/29/2009)
This is shedding its youthful freshness. Not a bad thing but this seems to be at an in between stage at the moment. Aromas of tobacco, earth and leather. The acid it s slightly sour. The fruit is very ripe but moving to the back. In someways this was Bordeaux like. Very nice and should continue to progress. (89 pts.)

jason-
interesting, do you think this will get any better or did we miss the boat when we were just supposed to glug it young??

I think it could get more interesting in an aged way. I think it could add on more secondary qualities, where as right now it seems to be a bit in between.

And it is/was a great bargain.

I think these wines are best at two to three years out from vintage, although in retrospect I wish I had kept a bottle or two of the 2002 vintage to see what would happen with ten years in the cellar. Incidentally – I noted a change in style with this wine beginning with the 2004 vintage, with a more “dilute” flavor profile, less intense fruit and a bit lighter in body.

I liked these lush wines on release when it was first introduced. Haven’t drunk a bottle in quite a few years now and probably never will now.

well phil
