2002 Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino (11/22/2013)
Decanted for 15 minutes. Really flowered after 90 minutes, even better at two hours. When it opened up, it took on the classic favors of Tuscan terroir. Earthy mushrooms and herbs. Light red fruit. Long finish but unusual. It sits at the back of the tongue and fills the back of he mouth. Good blance. Very smooth. Light alcohoL, 12.5 ABV. more proof that patience works. It needed the 11 years. (90 pts.)

Very interesting note, Jay, given that: (1) 2002 was not a great vintage, one that I never thought would be worthy of aging . . . (2) . . . especially for a Rosso, and (3) Banfi is a large, factory production. Glad this one aged well and gave you a good experience.
Wow, 2002 is probably the worst vintage in 20 years. I’m amazed. A, I disagree though about Castello Banfi and make my argument in ine of last weeks articles.
Fits nicely in with Brodie’s thread and question about ageability of Rossos. Thanks for this TN, Jay.
maluhia,

This surprises me greatly, but glad it showed well. Has it been stored Cooler than normal in the last ten years? by all accounts it SHOULD be dead
From the archive.
Just opened the `11 Rosso…pepper and pepper galore. Tarry, licorice and slight herbal bitterness on the finish. Might need the steak I have my eye on!
