TN: 2002 and 2010 Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc

  • 2002 Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (3/9/2014)
Allegedly contains some declassified village fruit. Light yellow in color. Fruit faded. Still some vibrant acidity. A bare hint of honey. Probably past it’s prime. Lacking the floral prettiness of the 2010 and not enough aged notes to compensate for the loss.
  • 2010 Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (3/9/2014)
5-6th bottle and consistent. Light straw with tint of green. Delicious fruit, lemon, and a wonderful white floral prettiness. Much preferred it over the 2002 next to it.

Older isn’t always better.

You’re on a roll Fred! Keep the tasting notes coming .

Done for a bit buddy! Time to work off all those calories.

Toughen up Fred!

That 2010 is one of the great Bourgogne Blancs. The 2011 aint half bad either although a lot leaner.

Best Regards
Jeremy

I observe that Dom. Leflaive’s Bourgogne Blanc is priced like a solid 1er from elsewhere.

Indeed Ian - for great wine to drink at home, I look just as much at what’s best for a pricetag, and not just a label - so yes it’s a GREAT Bourgogne (except 06, and let’s not forget it contains a lot of villages grapes), but objectively, it’s only average for a $50+ wine. A whole host of ‘named’ Meursault villages eg Tillets, Clos du Cromin (etcetera) are cheaper and often nicer…

Hi Bill,

What have you got against the '06? I opened one this weekend that I thought was drinking quite nicely…way beyond its classification and its price point.

Two recent LOVES here. The 10 Rocks! Much better than 11…1er quality…could drink this all day long! I’ve had the 02 a couple times recently and really liked it! More honey, dried apple, smoke and chalk… to go with the still fresh citrus. After having many 01-09 Leflaive GC’s of late…these BB’s are well worth the 8-10th of the price!!!

Maybe from St. Aubin. I don’t see a lot of Puligny or Chassagne 1er for $50.

Had a couple of the 07’s about 15 months ago and liked them a lot. Thought they were terrific value.

I’ve never tried the 02 but really like the 2009 & more so the 2010. Your note on the 2010 has motivated me to maybe open one this week. The last 2009 I had was probably nearing the end of it’s drinking window but was nevertheless a solid BB.

Drank most of my 09 BBs first because they seemed to be losing acidity and freshness at an alarming rate. Same with the 09 Puligny Montrachet.

Will do the 02 Bourgogne Blanc and the 09 Puligny Montrachet side by side next month. My last bottles of both.

For me, a poster-child for the lifeless and flabby 06s, Joshua

Maybe somewhere in the middle. There’s a fair selection of Chassagne (less Puligny) near $50, and a very large number of excellent 1er Chablis under $40. Much good GC Chablis can be had near $60.

Bill,

When did you last try the '06? Obviously, you have way more experience than me here, but I would not have called what I drank flabby. It was no Chablis, but I didn’t get a lot of fat, and no overpowering or jammy fruit. Nor was the mid-palate weak.

Just wondering…
