TN: 2001 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain

  • 2001 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St. Urbain - France, Alsace, Thann, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (6/17/2009)
I brought this to the recent Seattle Champagne Gala offline, as a small counterbalance to the plethora of bubbles on ice on Michael Gordon’s deck. 95 point nose for me, easy. Searing notes of musky pineapple and yellow plum, a constant streak of minerals and just a whisper of the Ranger peat. The palate still carried a good deal of baby fat, as the labeled indice ‘2’ might have been more along the lines of a ‘3’ or so. I would have liked have seen a touch more acidity, but this wine is still very young, and the track record at this Domaine indicates that patience will be the name of the game. Still, a rich, hedonistic, blast of pinot gris that would probably be best served with robust and spicy Asian cuisine for maximum present day enjoyment. (91 pts.)

My 5th and final bottle (ah the good old days of PC Weekend specials of ZH for $45), and while it took a while, I can say with absolute certainty that the Rangen terrior has finally unfolded. Though ‘Indice 2’ you can pretty much lob the sweetness scale out the window, as we are now in the discussion realm of fiery Scotch like peat, not to mention color. As to be expected, massive and oily in texture. The finish was long and contained a slightly bitter finish that I found very appealing. Tiny bit of heat, but a very small nitpick. Should hold for another 3 to 5 years, but nothing to be gained by further age methinks. (93 points)
