For my very first Father’s Day, I decided to pull a 2001 Screaming Eagle to drink tonight. Too bad to Manlin, who decided to call in sick and bag on dinner at our house. Wuss.
2001 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon- USA, California, Napa Valley (6/21/2009)
The first word that comes to mind is balance, which is the signature of every Screagle that I have had. Beautiful nose of sweet cassis, anise, and subtle tar. On the palate, the wine is nicely soft with sweet silky tannins that blend in beautifully. Finish goes on and on. Very smooth. A wonderful wine and a treat to drink. (97 pts.)
In addition to the Screagle, we also opened a 2004 Aubert Reuling chardonnay to have a couple of glasses of white wine. I didn’t take notes, but I thought that the wine was quite representative of Aubert, including the hazy light color that has marked almost every Aubert that I have had. Not quite as good as other Aubert chardonnay’s, still an excellent wine.
Overshadowing the wines was spending the day with my daughter Erin, who turns 1 year old next Sunday. She came oh so close to taking her very first step today, and told me “night night” for the first time as she was put down for the evening. The day would have been perfect drinking Two Buck Chuck after that.
what a great bottle of wine to honor your daughter - she is adorable! mine was born in 98 and every year on her b-day (6/19) i open a 98 in her honor. this year it was a mag of montelena , drinking quite well i must say for the much maligned 1998 vintage in ca.
happy fathers day and many happy returns lifting a glass in honor of our little girl!
Nice notes Jim, thanks. I guess that Manlin stood you up since he has sworn off anything California that is not blonde.
I agree that the signature of Screaming Eagles made by Heidi was the amazing balance of the wines. There was never a brick out of place in the structure of the wines.
Congrats on your first Father’s Day. I will celebrate mine tomorrow with my soon to be 5 year old. (July 1)
Please let me know when you plan to next visit Arizona.
Best Jack.
We did brunch at the Grand Bohemian in Orlando. I asked for the wine list, and was ready to order a 2004 WS Spatlese, but no one ever came back to take the order, so I had iced tea.
Ditto. They poured it at the winery alongside a 2002 when we visited, pop and pour right in front of my eyes (both the 98 and 02) so no funny business - my wife and I both preferred the 98.
Then again, we also dug a 96 Merlot library wine .
