TN: 2001 Roberto Voerzio Piemonte Merlot Vigneto Fontanazza

  • 2001 Roberto Voerzio Piemonte Merlot Vigneto Fontanazza - Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC (4/15/2012)
Decanted quickly for sediment and served immediately. Initially, the roasted fruit and oak on the nose was overwhelming, and I was expecting disappointment. With about an hour of air, this really came around and became something special. A powerful nose of roasted plums, black cherries, cedar, leather, tobacco, balsamic glaze, earth, truffle, chocolate, spent coffee grinds, a light herbal note and baking spice; quite savoury. On the palate, dark and red fruits, cedar, leather, chocolate, aged balsamic, truffle and earth. Extremely rich and unctuous, showing great texture and mouthfeel. The palate here is seamless; perfectly integrated, exceptional balance. The tannin is fully resolved and there is just enough acidity here to keep this from being flabby. (95 pts.)

I’ve never seen this. I’m curious what it costs.

Unfortunately, it is not available in the US (at least per WSPRO). I purchased my bottle from a shop in Calgary, AB, which seems to be the only place to purchase it within North America. The cost was $199.

Stunning bottle…Roberto Voerzio makes this only in the best years. We visited the winery last may and were told that he only makes it in the best years because if he makes it and it isn’t spectacular…“people will laugh at me” Very small production.
We were told at our visit that this bottle was poured blind at a restaurant in castiglione falleto against a 2001 Petrus I believe and they got people to pay 5 euros to try both and tell them which one they preferred…every diner preferred the Voerzio Merlot [shock.gif]

Thanks for the note! Good to see a note on Voerzio wine…which you don’t see much of. Never had that wine yet…but am a huge fan of his wines! Might be crackin a '97 Brunate next week!
