TN: 2001 Pride Mt Cab - A fine evolution that sang tonight!

  • 2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (6/28/2014)
This btl came directly from the winery a few months ago with obvious perfect provenance. I double decanted this at 4PM and we started drinking it around 6PM. It showed a fair amount of sediment on the decant leaving a low neck fill after I poured it back into the btl. I put the cork back in until we started drinking it around 6PM. The color is still dark crude with pretty cherry red edges. This has a powerful, in your face, nose of; tobacco, cedar, expresso and berries. Love the Pessac like the nose! The mouth feel is sensual and resolved. Rich, chocolate covered berries, cherries, raspberries, cedar, licorice, and spice on the palate. Big mountain fruit but not heavy or flabby. Rather, very focused and impressive. Excitingly fresh and vibrant. Long! Delicious and a perfect pairing with tenderloin tonight. I’m excited to have 2 more left and I plan on drinking them within the next 1-3 years. This is CA mountain Cab at its very best! (97 pts.)

This started out with a huge floral, oak free, nose when I popped the cork. I noticed a decent amount sediment so I decided to double decant quick and put the cork back in since it smelled so great already. After back in the blt I ended up with a low neck fill left. Still smelling great. I took out the cork again an hour or two later and about 20 minutes before dinner and poured a glass. Gone was most of the lovely floral fruit from the nose to be replaced by burbon oak barrel smells. There was still fruit on the palate but it seemd like it had slipped a couple notch since my last tasting 3 years ago. The oak now seems more prevalent. I have three left. Next time I open one I won’t decant and see if that helps? Maybe I gave this too much air? I’ll try annother blt in the next 6-12 months. (88 pts.)

Tonight at In Season. I double decanted this at 5PM and started drinking it around 8PM at the restaurant. It showed a fair amount of sediment on the decant causing me to toss a decent mouthful down the drain as I poured it back into the btl. The color is still dark crude. This has a fabulus nose of tobacco and expresso! Worth it just for the nose. The palate was pretty silky but still the tanins could resolve more. Rich chocolate covered berries and spice on the palate. Big mountain fruit but not heavy. Long! Delicious and a perfect pairing with tenderloin tonight. (93 pts.)

Drank that wine a few months back. Really, really good right now. Wish I had more.

I can’t say how pleasantly surprised I was with this btl. I hope my other 2 bottles at a local storage place are in as good a shape as this one from the winery recently.

I did as you last night, double decanted then started drinking an hour later - delicious! I have a crapload of these wines that I am waiting patiently for them to mellow and this is the best one I have had in years. The last 01 I had (reserve) was a bit intense but they are starting to hit their stride I believe.
Thanks for the heads up as it was a very enjoyable cab.
