2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/28/2010)
Full throttle, big, syrupy blueberry, milk chocolate, new oak. Cloyingly sweet. I found it overbearing and rather one-dimensional though I know this style is (or at least has been) very popular among some critics and collectors. I bought these wines early in my collecting “career” and now am disappointed more often than not. My opinion is that this style is unbalanced. Checking in on the wine on Day 2, it is all prune flavor. (85 pts.)

What I’ve found as well, unfortunately. Though my tastes have changed in the intervening years, I remember this being a monster on release, but well balanced. They have such wonderful terroir up there, would be interesting to see what could be done if they took an approach more like Monte Bello.
Interesting note- I have recently had the 2002 and 1997 Pride and thought they were both excellent. The 1997 was a real treat. These wines will never be called subtle, but I did not find them tooooo extracted or out of balance.
Recently had the '01 Pride Reserve, it was ass-kicking. Total Foleyesque. I have always liked the '01 reg the best of the last 5 or so years I have sampled. BTW, I sold all my 02’s after a few dissapointments.
Randy, did you have this one with food?
I’ve been posting notes on the 01 Pride for years now and IMO it’s getting worst every time I try one. Good thing I on have a couple left. This is another wine that I’ll never buy again…along with Carlisle.
How many you bringing east with you next week?

I didn’t think of that…but it sure would be a great way to get rid of them. ![snort.gif [snort.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/b/bdc3944606213c4dca6c1169cf0a166c8bc4f8c9.gif)
I liked it early, but later bottles were not as good IMHO. It is big in your face and better when young. I actually liked the Merlot a bit more.
“Totally Foleyesque” would be a good way to describe these wines.
I drank the wine with a simply grilled NY steak and roasted potatoes.
