TN: 2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Alberdi Reserva (Spain, La Rioja, Rioja)

  • 2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Alberdi Reserva - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (8/1/2009)
Had this over the course of the last two evenings. Quite a pretty wine. Medium bodied. Plum and cherry fruit with earth, spice and some dill pickle (which is likely from the American oak). This is a very nice QPR. To me, although this will probably cellar for a decade longer and improve, this is a great wine to drink now.

Always a favorite bottle from a well respected producer. Nice note. I thought they were a little more traditionally styled, do they use American oak?

Mark.

Traditionally styled, this is. They do use American oak though.

Thanks for the TN, Steffen. Here is my recent note for their 01 Selección Especial:

  • 2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Alberdi Selección Especial - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (2/17/2009)
Medium ruby/garnet color. Nose of cinnamon and nutmeg with some saddle leather and sweet cream notes, a touch of barnyard funk and some sour strawberry. Racy acidity on the palate, palate-cleansing, medium bodied and very dry with fine tannins. 90+ (90 pts.)

Well, to be clear, it is traditional in Rioja to use american oak.
