TN: 2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino

  • 2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (8/21/2009)
Old school, masculine winemaking. Leather, dust, red fruits, earth, plenty of chewy tannin, lots of acidic cut, medium bodied. Fairly closed, even 5 hours later this is pretty unyielding and barely budged from opening, perhaps adding a bit of a lifted dusty / perfumy character, like talcum powder. Great depth of fruit under all the structure. The most closed 01 Brunello I’ve had to date, this needs at least another 4 or 5 years and will be a fantastic bottle way down the road, huge potential.

My favorite producer of Brunello. Still classic and trustworthy!

The 82 Riserva is still drinking well.

Ken,

Definitely one of my top 5, but probably not quite my favorite.

Probably the best value wine in Brunello, and one of the better agers for sure!
