2001 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino- Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (7/1/2009)
Opaque garnet, no lightening at the edge. Cherry, some dark fruit, and a bit of tobacco/leather on the nose. Bright red fruit, with some tannin and a hint of chocolate on the palate. This has been a consistently delicious wine for a year or two now. YUM.
No, Todd. Not “Fail.” Merely – get thee hence and buy some 01 Brunello - chop chop. It’s still out there and relatively cheap (assuming your comparos are grand cru burgundy, champagne, et al.)
01 Il Poggione is a really nice wine. Last I had it (2 years ago perhaps?) it was, true to producer / style, a bit austere / drying but with great aromatics and great balance. I think I have 7 or 8 bottles squirreled away and I don’t plan on cracking one for another 3-4 years, so thanks for the glimpse!
The 04 has also gotten some raves. There might be discounts on the 01 or other older vintages. My last of their 82 Riserva was gorgeous just a few years ago.
