I’ve been on a bit of a Brunello kick lately, and my experience with this wine and 01 Il Poggione a couple of nights ago tells me that perhaps some of the more traditional wines are finally starting to shut down! Lots of promise but it may be time to lock them away for a solid 5+ years.

2001 Il Colle Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (8/25/2009)
Fairly brooding, structured, serious wine is the first impression. Lots of concentration, plenty of acid, plenty of tannin. I wouldn’t call this over-extracted but I would call it very concentrated and “dense.” After a couple hours the nose starts opening with classic dried red fruits, leather, dust, talcum and flowers. Intoxicating on the nose, rich on the palate, and decently long on the palate until the structure clamps down and you’re left with a mouth of tannin and acid. I’d say this is a little lusher / rounder and roughly qualitatively comparable to an 01 Il Poggione but a hair softer / richer, with sweeter tannin, perhaps also a bit like 01 Livio Sassetti Pertimali. Definitely a great wine, check back in 5-10 years though and let it rest in the meanwhile.
