TN: 2001 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà

  • 2001 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (9/17/2018)
I have to say that I’m not concerned that this wine is drying out like others have noted. If anything I would say this is on the young side of it’s life. I did purchase this bottle directly from the winery in 2016 so the provenance is near perfect…and if I had another bottle of this, I’d revisit it again in another decade+. Med+ body, quite tannic, yet also with a wealth of red fruits that balanced it out nicely. Tasted side by side with a 1971 Barolo Monvigliero and the pair of wines offered a nice contrast. This wine needed food to tackle the tannin…with a little Eposes and prosciutto this wine exploded with a wealth of red fruits and a nice lengthy finish…Outstanding!!!

Thanks for the notes. I have a bottle of this and the regular 01. Sounds like I can hold off on this one.

John, I would hold off on this if I had more in the cellar. I bought a Vertical from the winery in 2016 with the 96, 99, 01, 04, 06, & 08. All that I have opened have been highly enjoyable when I opened them…but to me this could still use more time…it’s still super young. I don’t know if others on CT have gotten damaged bottles or if they aren’t used to the tannin but with food this really shined. I’d be very comfortable sitting on another bottle of this for 10-20+ years if it had good storage.
