2001 Gaja Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Double decanted four hours early. Very dark colour. Aromas of black truffle, black plums and dark cherries, high cacao chocolate, tar and old rose perfume. In the mouth, a beautiful, rich and deep wine. Creosote, dark berries, liquorice and tartufi neri. A huge fruit volume and architecture with lots of power. Good acidity, fine grained tannins and a long, savoury finish. The next day, the last glass had a more subdued nose of old leather and tobacco leaf and a more evolved, savoury palate of red fruit and dry brushwood. Give the wine a 6+ hour decant. Drinking well now but years ahead of it, of course. (94 pts.)
