2001 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett- Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/10/2016) #03-02, 8.5% abv. Very pale in colour. Very stony nose, with just a nice mix of yellow and white fruit, as well as some floral tones and a touch of gasoline. The palate is extremely racy, almost too much so, in that it’s out of balance. The acidity is a bit sharp and piercing, and there’s no roundness to smooth out the rough edges. A much more mineral than fruit driven riesling, and while there’s plenty of complexity on the palate, the acid is just too out of balance here… this is coming awfully close to my nightmare wine of Scharzhofberger GG. A rare miss for this great estate. (85 pts.)
This domaine made great 01s. I bought the lineup from kabinett to gka. Haven’t tried that last one yet but the others have been excellent apart from a corked kabinett.
This is an under the radar producer I’ve loved since I was bowled over by the 1990 spatlese just after its release. Alas, i drank the last of my half case almost 8 years ago to the day (according to CT, on 6/12/08).
