TN: 2001 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

A lighter weight CdP, no question. I’m getting some good meatiness, red fruits (especially plum), and a good dose of bacon on both the nose and the palate. It is light in texture, however, but does gain a bit of oomph in the finish. I’m enjoying it, and for what I paid I have no issues with it, although I was definitely expecting something a bit grander in scale. They will be consumed in the short term and should work well with many foods. (90 pts.)

Wasn’t this thing WS wine of the year or something?

It was among their top 100 wines - number 41, apparently.

I think it just peaked VERY early.

I think it was the '99 that was the WOTY.

This wine is so done. I have not really liked any of the bottles I had.

I tasted the wine shortly after it was shipped to my State it it looked like it had a nice future. I bought six and it just plain sucked. Weak, diluted and fruit of the loom. [emot-pwn.gif]
I gave them away to the unsophisticated in my life.

Ditto.
The ‘99’-01 were so uninteresting. Considering what many folks in cdp did in those years, the Guigals were pedestrian to me.

Jack, Dennis, and others - Any experiences with Guigal’s '01 Gigondas? I’ve not had it, and a local wine store just picked up a number of cases of the wine in a .375 format, selling it for about $10 a bottle. I keep forgetting to pick some up to try (it’s in a center aisle and not with the other Rhones) but I’m making a note to buy a bottle to try. Just curious.

Agreed. I bought a bunch at Houston Costco and seriously regretted the purchase.

Bought 4, hated 2, got 2 left, because WHY open them? Honestly, I have never had a Guigal I have liked, from either CdP or Cote Rotie, and the cheaper ones are oh so much worse. Probably they all come from France. [suicide.gif]

I haven’t had a lot of them, but CdP is the Guigal wine I like least. Fortunately, I only bought a single bottle of the 2001. Nothing overtly wrong with it, just kind of blah.

I had the '98 a few weeks ago at dinner and it was a very solid wine, low 90’s.

To me it tasted like cheap, high-volume, industrial wine. The stuff you pick up in Modesto (if you’re so inclined) for $20 per case.

Wow, it’s a veritable love-fest in here!

Sorry Todd. I think I paid about $20 per for this? I’m still pissed!

No wonder! I should have read the damned label!

This bottling is on par with Chapoutier’s La Bernardine. Always dependable, enjoyable & true to the appellation but never great.

That sounds more like my notes - nice, enjoyable, but not complex or earth-shattering. The majority seems to take it more of a ‘stay the hell away - this wine is disgusting’ path.

I don’t use “Fruit of the Loom” often in my tasting notes. Blah, Blah, Blah. [1974_eating_popcorn.gif]
